Black-chinned Siskin

Species: American Siskin
Latin name: Carduelis barbatus
English name: Black-chinned Siskin
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Fringillidae

Description:

Habitat: Southern South America, northern Chile and western Argentina. The breeding range extends as far as Cape Horn and the Falkland Islands. Habitat at an altitude of 1,500 metres.
The male has a black crown, chin and upper throat, as well as black primary and tail feathers. The cheeks and breast are bright yellow. The wing bars are narrow and yellow, and the outer edges of the primary flight feathers are also yellow. The female lacks a black crown; her overall colouring is duller, and the yellow on her breast is greenish-yellow.
Along with the Magellanic finch (Carduelis magellanicus) and the Venezuelan red finch (Carduelis cucullata), the black-chinned finch, also known as the bearded finch, is certainly one of the easiest to breed. Breeding cages: 1.20 m × 0.50 m × 0.50 m recommended for a pair, or small aviaries. Like the Magellanic finch, it overwinters outdoors in our climate.
A hardy finch and a good breeder in captivity, provided you have some experience of breeding carduelines.
