When, in 1998, I decided to share my passion for birds online by creating the first website dedicated to Carduelinae breeders, ‘Carduelan’s Breeder’, I never imagined for a moment that it would prove so popular amongst enthusiasts of this speciality. This unpretentious website was intended to share information and to help people learn about and breed Carduelinae and, more broadly, fringillids in colour mutations and their wild phenotype, whilst not overlooking the regulatory requirements in force in France. But what are the Carduelinae? Carduelines belong to a vast family of passerines found all over the world, comprising some 300 species, including numerous canaries, siskins, chaffinches, bullfinches, goldfinches and many others…
Time has passed, and thanks to this website, I have achieved my goal. I have also met breeders from France and abroad, and some have become friends – they will no doubt recognise themselves!
Without any advertising, this site has become a go-to resource, and the high number of visits recorded (over 150,000 to date), the emails received (I stopped counting them a long time ago), and the messages of support in the guestbook, have shown that there are many of us around the world who love the Fringillidae family, or quite simply, passerines.
For all these reasons, and for your enjoyment, this site continues to evolve over the years. Romain, a passionate breeder and long-standing friend, oversees its technical development and also helps to enrich its content. It is thanks to him that I became particularly interested in the Cardinalidae.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you share our interest in the breeding and study of the Carduelinae, Cardinalidae, and, more broadly, all passerines. Many species and their subspecies are often little known to breeders (and breeders’ clubs). Our aim is to share our knowledge and to promote the breeding of purebred species, both in their wild phenotype and in colour mutations.
About Jean-Michel EYTORFF
I bred my first Carduelinae when I was twelve. I am now in my sixties and have never stopped breeding these magnificent birds. Since 1996, I have held the Certificate of Competence for the breeding of all Fringillidae, issued at the time by the Ministry of the Environment. And since 2018, I have held the Certificate of Competence for the breeding of Passeridae, Emberizidae, Passerillidae, Cardinalidae, Paridae, Panuridae, Timaliidae, Aegithalidae and Bombycillidae.
Among other things, I specialise in breeding species and subspecies with colour mutations, and more generally I am passionate about genetics in the field of ornithology. My second passion is nature photography.
I chair the European Fauna and Hybrids section within the C.N.J.F. (National Commission of Judges of France) and I am also an International Expert Judge for the C.O.M. (World Ornithological Confederation) in the European Fauna and Hybrids category.
About Romain
Following a meeting with Jean-Michel Eytorff, a few years ago, I decided to give up breeding Gouldian finches and to devote myself to my favourite birds: Grey-headed Bullfinches and colour-mutant Siskin. That meeting led to a great friendship and a small, unpretentious finch breeding operation. I also hold the certificate of competence for breeding Passerine and Cardinalid finches
I have developed this website with immense pleasure! The pleasure of making my own small contribution to the development of finch breeding, but also for the sheer joy of looking at the birds…
