This magnificent passerine, incorrectly referred to as a bullfinch, was long considered an exotic finch. In recent years, it has been breeding in southern Spain and has therefore been included on the list of protected species in European fauna. It is found in the Canary Islands, North Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and northern Pakistan.

The male (pictured) has predominantly grey-brown plumage tinged with pink, pink wings and an orange-red beak.

The female, like many females, is more inconspicuous, with light grey plumage; the outer coverts are pale pink, as are the chin, throat and the edges of the outer tail feathers. The beak is pale yellow.

It is becoming rare at bird shows, which is a shame.
