Description:

The Linnet, along with the Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis carduelis) and the Bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula), is a bird particularly admired by fans of finches.

This magnificent passerine is a regular visitor to our gardens, orchards, vineyards, moors and other gorse thickets. It likes to nest in conifers (thujas, cypresses) and fruit trees. In spring, along with the Cini canary (Serinus serinus), its return from migration heralds the arrival of fine weather and the breeding season for our resident birds.

During the breeding season, the male displays particularly distinctive plumage. The head is grey, the forehead is red, the upperparts and back are russet-brown with fine dark brown streaks, and the breast is red. The wing bars are white.

The female is more drab than the male, with very pronounced streaks on her back and breast. She lacks any red colouring.
