Description:
Habitat: Central, western and southern Europe. Inhabits high-altitude coniferous forests.
The male has a grey nape and occiput, a green face, a yellowish breast and underparts, and an olive-green back. The female is more subdued. Her back is greenish-grey, with more pronounced streaks than the male’s. Both sexes have yellow on their primary, secondary and tertial coverts, as well as on the edges of the flight feathers and tail feathers. The yellow is less intense in the female.
Breeding is tricky, and even more difficult than with the European serin (Serinus serinus). An aviary is recommended, with minimum dimensions of 2m x 2m x 1m.
