Description:
This magnificent ‘Gros-bec’ is most commonly seen in aviaries and is bred particularly in Germany, as are many gros-becs.
Its range extends from eastern Siberia, via the Ussuri region, through northern China to Japan.
Sexual dimorphism is far from obvious.
The male has a black crown, chin and mask. The body is light grey with brownish tints on the back. The rump is whitish. There is a white spot on the primary flight feathers.
The female is similar to the male, with a brownish-grey rump. The plumage as a whole is slightly duller.
