About the same size as the Peony Bullfinch, the male and female both lack a black crown. The head, neck, back and breast are orange-brown; the wings and tail are black, with a faint grey wing bar; the rump is white. The lores, eye ring, forehead and chin are black. The female resembles the male but is more greyish; the orange-brown has given way to a greenish-grey mixed with pale orange-yellow on the breast. These magnificent birds were rarely imported into Europe until the winter of 2022. Specimens exhibited in Udine (Italy) at the Hornemanni Middle European Club’s international exhibition.
