Species: Philippine Bullfinch
Latin name: Pyrrhula leucogenis
English name: White-cheeked Bullfinch
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Fringillidae
Description:
Many thanks to Desmond Allen for these beautiful photographs!
This small bullfinch (14.5 cm) has black on its forehead, crown, lores and around the eyes, as well as on its chin. As with the Japanese bullfinch, there are two patches on the cheeks extending onto the neck, but these are white rather than red. The back and shoulders are brownish-grey, with olive-green highlights. The rump is whitish. The throat, belly and neck are brown. The wings and tail are black with a blue sheen. As with the Nepalese Bullfinch, the last primary feather is edged with red. The female resembles the male but is paler. To my knowledge, this Bullfinch has never been imported before.
