Description:

The chaffinch is a common sight in our parks and gardens. During the winter months, it is a regular visitor to the areas around bird feeders and other seed dispensers. It spends the winter in flocks before pairing off with a female of its choice to breed and defend its territory. It feeds on insects and seeds. It is a remarkable singer, so much so that, in the not-too-distant past, breeders in northern France and Belgium used to enter it into song contests. It is a difficult bird to breed, as the males are particularly aggressive during the breeding season.
