The Spanish Sparrow is a cousin of our house sparrow (Passer domesticus)
It is found in the Cape Verde Islands, the Canary Islands, North Africa, Southern Europe, and in southern Asia as far west as China.
The male has a russet-brown crown and nape, and a black bib extending into black patches on the flanks. It is worth noting that, unlike our house sparrow, it has a white eye stripe. The back is predominantly black (with broad, black streaks)
The female has a more subdued plumage, very similar to that of the female house sparrow but paler and also more streaked.
It breeds in colonies, like the house sparrow or the tree sparrow (Passer montanus)
An aviary is recommended. Please note that it is insectivorous during the breeding season.
