Habitat: This magnificent ‘grosbeak’ is found from northern Pakistan to northern Burma, and also in western China. It nests in coniferous forests, rhododendron forests and dwarf juniper thickets.

The male closely resembles the Black-and-Yellow Grosbeak (Mycerobas icterioides) but has more orange-yellow on the nape. The photo speaks for itself.

The female is more drab: grey head, pale greyish-olive upperparts, back and wings. The underparts are dull yellow with russet tints.

Some time ago, this magnificent bird was regularly imported. Some cautious breeders have sought to establish breeding lines. It is recommended that spacious aviaries be provided for this species. Not suitable for beginners.
