Until a few years ago, the Saxaul Sparrow was imported in large numbers. The closure of the borders with Asia brought an end to the importation of this magnificent sparrow.Its range is diverse. It is found in Central Asia, Mongolia and as far as north-western China. It inhabits deserts and isolated villages. It likes to nest in poplar trees. Its ball-shaped nest is characteristic and common to all sparrows. The sparrow nests in a crevice or builds a loose, ball-shaped nest.
The male has a particularly attractive head pattern, with a supercilium and russet-coloured cheeks. Its back is russet streaked with black.
In the female, the russet on the head is replaced by a yellowish colouring. In the male, grey-brown has replaced the russet on the top of the head. The cheeks and throat are grey-black.
An aviary is essential for rearing this very active sparrow.
